Backup & cyber-resilience — Synology

Your data survives anything. Even a cyberattack.

Backup is your last line of defence — and often the most overlooked. With Synology, IMACS SERVICES protects your entire IT environment (servers, virtual machines, workstations, Microsoft 365) from a single console, with no per-seat licensing and immutable copies that no ransomware can encrypt. Your data stays on your premises, in France.

Backup: your last line of defence

A firewall and antivirus reduce risk. They do not eliminate it. When ransomware breaks through, a server fails, or an employee deletes the wrong folder, one thing alone saves you: a clean, recent, restorable backup.

The blind spots we most commonly encounter:

  • Microsoft 365 is NOT backed up by Microsoft — the publisher guarantees availability, not the recovery of your deleted e-mails or files.
  • Backups on the same network are encrypted alongside everything else by modern ransomware.
  • Restores that have never been tested — you discover the backup is unreadable precisely when you need it.

The 3-2-1-1 rule, properly applied

The universal backup best practice, industrialised by Synology:

3 copies of your data
2 different media
1 off-site copy
1 immutable copy

And we add the '+1' that changes everything in 2026:

🔒 1 immutable copy (WORM) — locked, impossible to modify or delete, even with stolen administrator credentials. Ransomware is powerless against data it cannot overwrite.

🔌 Air-gap — a logical or physical isolation that cuts the backup off from the network. What cannot be reached cannot be attacked.

Active Backup Suite — your entire IT estate, one console, zero per-seat licensing

Synology's centralised backup suite protects your most critical environments. Costs are limited to hardware: no per-device, per-virtual-machine or per-account licensing fees.

Virtual machines

VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. Agentless incremental backup with instant VM restore from a local snapshot.

Physical servers

Windows Server and Linux. Full bare-metal backup with full-server or individual-file restore.

Workstations

Windows PCs and macOS Macs. Protection for roaming devices, with self-service restore for end users.

Microsoft 365

Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams backed up outside Microsoft's own infrastructure. The number-one blind spot for SMEs, finally covered.

Google Workspace

Gmail and Google Drive backed up locally, with granular restore by user or folder.

File servers & NAS

File shares, Synology, NetApp and Nutanix NAS. Your unstructured data is not overlooked.

ActiveProtect Appliance — the latest addition

In 2025, Synology launched ActiveProtect: a turnkey backup appliance built from the ground up to withstand AI-driven ransomware.

Everything is integrated into a single unit: backup software, storage, deduplication, immutability, and a single console capable of managing up to 2,500 servers or 300,000 workloads across all sites.

Plug in, protect, sleep soundly. No backup server to assemble, no licences to stack up.

What the range protects worldwide

More than 30 million workloads protected, including more than half of Fortune 500 companies.

Rated 4.9/5 with a 98% recommendation rate on Gartner Peer Insights.

Why ActiveProtect redefines cyber-resilience

Six built-in guarantees, no hidden extras, so that 'restore' is never just a prayer.

WORM Immutability

Your backups are locked: they cannot be modified or deleted before the defined retention period expires. Ransomware cannot encrypt them.

Native Air-gap

Logical or physical isolation of the backup copy. Data disconnected from the network is data beyond the reach of attackers.

Global Deduplication

Up to 99% fewer transfers and 80% less storage consumed. Backups complete twice as fast at source.

Automated Verification

Every backup is checked automatically, and corrupted data is repaired spontaneously. You know it can be restored.

Built-in Recovery Testing

A disaster recovery test (DRP) via integrated virtual machine: we prove it restarts, without waiting for a real incident.

Single Multi-site Console

One screen for all your servers and all your sites, with multi-cloud mobility and storage tiering.

Which ActiveProtect model suits your organisation?

From a single office to the data centre, the DP range covers every scale. IMACS sizes the exact model to match your actual data volumes.

Sovereignty: your data stays on your premises

Unlike "all-cloud" backups hosted abroad, Synology is deployed within your own walls. You retain physical control of your backup data — a decisive advantage for law firms, notarial practices and any organisation subject to professional secrecy or regulatory obligations.

If you need an off-site copy, it goes to a destination of your choosing: a second site, a remote NAS, or a cloud — encrypted, under your control.

Independent reputation

4.8/5 on Gartner Peer Insights for the Synology backup suite (101 customer reviews, July 2025).

No software licensing fees: the cost is limited to hardware, with no per-device or per-account charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't Microsoft 365 already backed up by Microsoft?

No. Microsoft guarantees service availability (the well-known uptime), but not the restoration of your data. In the event of:

  • accidental deletion (the recycle bin is emptied after 30 days = permanently lost),
  • malicious deletion by a departing employee,
  • ransomware encrypting your e-mails, OneDrive or SharePoint,
  • software corruption,

…you have no recourse without a third-party solution. Synology Active Backup for Microsoft 365 performs a genuine daily backup of Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, stored outside Microsoft's infrastructure, on your own premises.

How does an 'immutable' backup protect against ransomware?

Modern ransomware targets your backups first — encrypting or deleting them, often using stolen administrator credentials. As a result, even if you pay the ransom, you recover nothing.

An immutable backup (WORM — Write Once, Read Many) is locked for a defined period: no one, not even an administrator, can modify or delete it before that period expires. Ransomware hits a brick wall. Combined with air-gapping (network isolation), this is currently the most robust protection against encryption-based extortion.

What is the difference between Active Backup Suite and ActiveProtect?

Both protect the same environments (servers, VMs, workstations, Microsoft 365), but:

  • Active Backup Suite is the backup software, running on an existing Synology NAS. Ideal if you already have a NAS or Synology infrastructure.
  • ActiveProtect Appliance is a turnkey device (new for 2025) with everything integrated and pre-hardened: software, storage, immutability, and a multi-site console supporting up to 2,500 servers. Ideal for rapid deployment and centralised governance, particularly across multiple sites.

During the audit, we will guide you towards the option best suited to your existing setup and budget.

How much does it cost?

The major advantage of Synology: no per-seat, per-VM or per-mailbox software licensing. The cost consists primarily of:

  • the hardware (the appliance or NAS + disks, sized according to your data volumes),
  • IMACS SERVICES fees (audit, deployment, restoration testing, monthly monitoring).

As the price depends on your data volume and service level, we provide a personalised quote following a brief discussion and a free preliminary assessment. In line with our policy, we do not publish public pricing.

What if my premises burn down or are broken into?

This is precisely the purpose of the '1' in the 3-2-1-1 rule: an off-site copy. We configure encrypted replication of your backups to a second site, a remote NAS or a cloud of your choice. This way, a physical disaster (fire, flood, theft) will not cause you to lose either your data or your ability to resume operations. We also test this recovery scenario with you.

Free backup pre-assessment

30 minutes by video call plus a clear picture of your current situation: what is actually being backed up today, your blind spots (Microsoft 365, immutability, off-site storage), and a Synology recommendation sized for your organisation. No commitment.
